Reiki is being used in Veterans hospitals to treat soldiers returning from Iraq and Afghanistan. Fort Bliss, Texas a center for this activity. (Where else would you expect a military Reiki program to be located?) Here soldiers returning from war are treated for brain injury, PTSD and other conditions.
Psychologist John E. Fortunato started the The Fort Bliss Restoration and Resilience Center which opened July 2007. Patients volunteer for the program and receive about half the medication that those in other programs receive. The program makes use of a wide range of therapy including exercise, group sports activities, and various complementary therapies.
Reiki has been found effective in treating hyper arousal, anxiety, panic and tension induced physical pain. The program has been so successful that Army Chief of Staff Gen. George Casey said the program should be replicated throughout the military. The Army has also set aside $4 Million in grant money to study the effectiveness of complimentary therapies that include Reiki.
