Kurama Yama is the mountain where Usui Sensei had
his meditative experience and was given the gift of Reiki.
- The class is five days long.
- You will experience the spiritual energies of this sacred mountain and know in your heart why Usui Sensei was guided to this mountain to be given the gift of Reiki.
- There will be class time on the mountain including Ignitions and Reiki practice.
- We will stay at a traditional Japanese Ryokan Inn at the base of Mt. Kurama.
- We will experience Japanese Kaiseki cuisine prepared by an expert chef.
- The class will also include a Reiki Master who is fluent in Japanese and English to act as a translator to help us manage our activities.
This five-day training will include a day to arrive and check in to your room before class starts. The five class days will include time in the classroom and on the mountain including one or more Ignitions on the mountain if weather and conditions permit. The last day is for checkout. You are required to check in on Wednesday, November 5 at 10 am JST. Check-out is at noon on November 10th. We also recommend that to adjust for jet lag, you arrive in Japan at least 3 days before the class starts and stay at a hotel in northern Kyoto. Please remember when making your plans, Japan is 14 hours ahead of Eastern Daylight Time.
Class fee $4775.00
The fee includes the class fee along with lodging and food for 5 nights. You will also need to add the expenses for your round-trip airline ticket fee to either Tokyo Narita International Airport, or Osaka Kansai International Airport and all other travel fees such as hotel, taxi, bus and train or bus fares to Kurama. You must also have a valid passport and any other required travel documents. We will be supplying some travel instructions, but you are responsible for making and verifying all your travel arrangements on your own.
Sugako San, the proprietor of the lodge says, “This is a Ryokan Inn, which is slightly different than a hotel and is unique to Japan. Dinner is a showcase of Japan Ryokan. The lodge dinner cuisine is called kaiseki-ryōri which is highly valued in Japan. The chef examines all seasonal ingredients to deliver the gems of flavor and fragrance within.” William says, “I have to tell you it is by far the best food I have ever eaten.” Dinner is a multi-course meal with each course served one at a time. Each course is prepared with great care; attention is given to the mixture of flavors and textures of the food, the nutritional value, and the artistic appearance. Read more about Kaiseki cuisine - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kaiseki.
Kurama Village is a small traditional Japanese community. The lodging for the class is a traditional Ryokan Inn. It has traditional Japanese rooms with the traditional tatami mats on the floor to sleep on. The rooms are all shared rooms; there are no single or private rooms available for this trip. We found the rooms and the mats (which are like futons) to be very comfortable. In fact, they were more comfortable than the hotels we stayed in.
Reiki Requirements
To qualify to take this class, a student must have been a Reiki master for at least 6 months and be able to draw the Reiki II and master symbols from memory. Prior classes need to have been in person. However, online training for Reiki I&II and Reiki Master is acceptable for qualification as long is it is with someone who's lineage is with the ICRT. At the time of registration, you are required to send in a copy of your Reiki Master certificate. Please fax to 248-948-9534 or send as an attached file to center@reiki.org.
Physical Requirements
One requirement is that you must be in good physical condition. There is a 1200-foot elevation gain between the lodge and the top of the mountain. While there is an optional cable car that will take you up part way, there will still be a climb of about 800 feet to get from the end of the cable car ride to the top of the mountain. Most of this is via stairs and there are places to stop to rest. If you are to get to the top in a reasonable time and feel good when you get there, you need to be involved in an aerobic exercise program that includes stairs to make sure your legs are in good shape. The hike from the end of the cable car ride to the top of the mountain is similar to climbing up the stairs of an 80-story building. Just so you understand, this is a very tall building. (As an example, the Empire State Building in NYC is 102 flights of stairs.) And this is done in about an hour. It would be unfortunate for you to travel all that way and then not be able to get to the mountain top location in time to take part in the Ignitions, class time and Reiki sharing activity, all of which are required for you to complete the class and receive a certificate.
As of February 2024, there are no Covid or other travel restrictions to enter Japan. However, you are responsible for remaining informed should this situation change.
